Are Parenting Classes a Waste of Time?So you’ve just learned you’re going to be a new mom, congratulations! Being a mom can be very fulfilling but there are traps for the unwary. If this is your first baby, there are so many things you’ll need to know. So where do you go to find out about how to best care for your new baby?
There are plenty of parenting classes available today and you may be wondering if these are for you. What are the pros and cons of taking these types of classes? We’ll examine some good reasons below that you may or may not want to participate in these classes.
Your previous experience with babies may involve baby sitting or you may have looked after your friends’ children. Take it from me this doesn’t even give you a glimpse of what parenting is all about. Parenting is a huge responsibility and while it is very rewarding, you really need some knowledge up front to get you through from day to day. Parenting classes can supply this for you.
What will you learn? You’ll learn the know how on getting your baby to sleep, how to properly change a diaper and the right way to feed your baby. You’ll receive hands on learning by practicing on dolls rather than just trying to learn from a book.
Are the classes affordable? Parenting classes come in a variety of formats and prices, so there’s a good chance you will find one to suit your budget. In some cities you’ll be able to find free classes put on by non profit organizations.
Another bonus you may not have considered is the ability to meet other first time mums who are in the same situation as you. These types of classes are very popular so will meet all different types of people, some of whom may become your friends. If you’re a mom without family support, this could be very important for you.
There are disadvantage to everything and the problem with dealing with a class schedule is of course time. Most new mums work full time until shortly before the birth. If you’re not working, you may not be able to get to and from the classes easily. These are a couple of things to consider.
However if you are able, I hope you will try these classes for yourself. I’m sure you’ll find these parenting classes invaluable as a first time mom. You’ll get help and information and meet new friends into the bargain. Most importantly, you’ll be able to tackle the job of motherhood with new found confidence!
